Choosing Ingredients That Work (Not Just Sound Good)
Natural vs Synthetic: What Really Matters in Skincare
If you've ever stood in the skincare aisle and found yourself reaching for something just because the label said natural, you're not alone. We've all been greenwashed a little — led to believe that natural always means better, safer, or more effective.
But here's the truth: some of the best skincare ingredients are actually synthetic, and some natural ones can cause more irritation than benefit. It all comes down to what works, what’s gentle, and what makes your skin feel great.
My Ingredient Philosophy
At Byers Boutique Skincare, I use a combination of natural, naturally derived, and synthetic ingredients — and I do it on purpose.
Why?
Because I care more about results and safety than trends.
Some synthetic ingredients have a long-standing history of being gentle, non-irritating, and highly effective. Some natural ingredients, on the other hand, can be harsh, unstable, or more likely to trigger reactions (especially for sensitive skin — which many of my customers have).
It’s not about choosing one side. It’s about choosing what works best in the formula.
Transparency = Power
I want you to know exactly what you're putting on your skin, so I’ll be updating my website to include simple ingredient markers:
-
(N) for natural or naturally derived
-
(S) for synthetic
This way, you’ll have more information at your fingertips to decide what feels right for you.
Let’s Talk Scent Options
Another spot where I love giving you choice? Fragrance.
I offer customizable options so you can choose essential oils, fragrance oils, or go totally unscented. Each one has pros and cons, and it's not about one being “better” — it's about what you prefer and what your skin loves.
Whether it's a little lavender lift or completely fragrance-free, you get to choose what suits you best.
The Bottom Line
I formulate every product with intention — balancing nature and science to create skincare that feels good, works beautifully, and keeps irritation at bay.
Forget the buzzwords. You deserve skincare that’s simple, honest, and made for real life.
And if you ever have questions about an ingredient, just ask! I’m always happy to chat!
