Are You Making Your Skincare Last Too Long?

Do you stretch your skincare products for as long as humanly possible before restocking? I get it—we all want to get the most out of our routine. But here’s the thing: using expired skincare could be giving you the opposite of great-feeling skin.

Since being back at the weekly farmers market, I’ve had so many lovely customers stop by and say, “I still have a bit left from last summer!” If that’s you, first of all- thank you for loving your products! But second… that means your skincare might be expired or dangerously close.

So, is it really worth squeezing out that last drop?

Here are 3 important reasons to use up your skincare in a timely fashion (and then treat yourself to a fresh batch):

1. Bacteria and Mold Can Grow

Once preservatives break down (which happens over time), it’s open season for bacteria and mold—especially in products stored in warm, steamy bathrooms or opened regularly.

👀 Eye creams, masks, or jars you dip into? Extra risky.

Gross factor aside, applying these to your face can lead to irritation, breakouts, or even infections. Hidden mold = definitely not your skin’s BFF.

2. Actives Stop Being Active

If your product is designed to brighten, firm, or hydrate with powerhouse ingredients like Vitamin A (retinoids like in your Daily Face), Vitamin C, peptides, or hyaluronic acid, just know this: they don’t last forever.

Over time, those ingredients break down and lose effectiveness. So you might be applying your serum every night and wondering why your skin isn’t glowing anymore. Spoiler alert: it’s expired, not you.

3. Texture, Smell, and Colour Go Weird

Even if it looks okay at a glance, expired skincare can shift in sneaky ways. You might notice:

  • A strange or sour smell

  • Separation or clumping

  • A change in colour

  • A texture that just feels… off

Your skin is smart. It knows when something’s not right—and expired products can clog pores or mess with your barrier, causing more harm than good.

Never Guess With Our Products

We make it easy to know exactly when your skincare is at its best. Every Byers Boutique Skincare product comes with a clear “Best If Used By” date printed right on the bottom—no decoding, no guesswork. You’ll always know when it’s time to refresh your routine (and your glow).

💡Renee's Tip: When you open a new product, write the date on the jar or cap with a Sharpie. That way, you’ll always know how long it’s been hanging out in your routine.

In a Nutshell:

Expired skincare might look harmless, but it can be ineffective—or even risky. When in doubt, toss it out. Your face deserves better than moldy moisturizer and tired serums.
